So much of the commentary about the transfer portal has focused on the top players seeking rings or NIL or both, but the following link tracks all players in the portal which currently number 1,163. My take on it is that not all are seeking rings or NIL, but most want a better place to play. It's a new day. I wish them well. www.thenexthoops.com/features/2023-24-transfer-portal-tracker-ncaa-womens-basketball/A little math. There are 360 DI programs. If each one has a roster of 10 (that's low, but the math is easier) then there are 3,600 players minus those graduating which means somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 of all players are in the portal depending on how many are staying for the extra year.

I'd guess upwards of 95% of them are just looking for more playing time, wanting to play closer to home, are escaping an uncomfortable situation, responding to a coaching change, or have some reason other than pursuing a championship for entering the portal. That is because only a small percentage of those 1,163 portal players is talented enough to even see any court time on a team that is good enough to be a serious national championship contender. How many of those 1,163, for example, would ever leave the bench if they went to UConn? I don't think many. The elite players in the portal, players like Reagan Beers who have legitimate pro prospects, will likely want to transfer to prominent programs that are on TV a lot and make deep runs in the NCAA tourney where they can showcase their talents for all the world to see. And yes...elite players want to play for serious national championship contenders too. After all, those teams are more likely to be featured on TV and make deep tourney runs. However, elite players are only a small minority of the portal. Last week (2 Apr) ESPN only saw fit to highlight the top 10 transfers. Beers would certainly now be on that list but the fact that only 10 out of 1,163 portal players were even mentioned illustrates my point. www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/39818577/womens-ncaa-basketball-transfer-rankings-2024-25-season

I just saw a meme on FB saying that Hailey Van Lith is transferring to TCU, her third team in three years after Louisville and LSU. I tried to google confirmation but could not find any. But no matter where she goes, I think we can all agree that Van Lith is among the group of portals who are transferring to pursue their own personal glory, not out of allegiance to any school, coach, or geographic area.

I am not expecting her to suddenly discover a motor...or passion. Yet I am looking forward to seeing how she does too.

I am not expecting her to suddenly discover a motor...or passion. Yet I am looking forward to seeing how she does too. While I agree she has not shown the drive expected she could adopt an "I'll show you." attitude. She has shown an ability to play, but not the commitment and it is her final year. I thought she might go to a school with an excellent ASL program, her focus, like Houston or Cinncinati. Maybe she tried.
