Earlier I posted about the UConn four guard offense on another site and how it make the 3 a greater threat. Someone replied, “They will have to shoot 3s better than 5-22 (27.3%)." True. That prompted me to do some math.
Watching the game highlights I noticed how much scoring was done in the paint. Granted Aaliyah contributed to that, but not all of her 9 FGs were in the paint. UConn shot 38-66 FGs of which 6-22 were 3s. That means 32-44 (72.7%) FGs were 2s and many of those were in the paint with quite a few adding +1 (some of the 22-28 FTs).
Looking at the highlights UConn had all five players beyond the arc quite a bit with DePaul defenders out on them guarding against the 3 allowing drives to the paint. It may be a coincidence, but seems to me, a novice at this, to be important as we play against teams with bigs in the middle. If they don't come out on Aaliyah she can hit the long jumper.

I'm not sure opposing coaches would agree that Aaliyah can hit the long jumper. I mean...she has only taken three 3's and she missed them all. Her overall 60.3% FG% is very good but heavily influenced by layups and put backs. I've seen her hit mid-range jumpers but I've seen her miss a lot of them too. Surely, there is a stat being tracked by someone somewhere that isolates her mid-range but I don't know of it.
I expected us to be a better 3 point shooting team than we are this year. Injuries to Azzi and Caroline are probably lowering our team numbers. But whatever the reason we are only 22nd in the NCAAs for 3pt FG% at 36.4%. That is better than last year's 35.7% but South Carolina is shooting 40.54% from the arc this year (#2 in the NCAAs). We'll need a hot game from the arc to beat them and some of the other elite teams this year. In four of our five losses this year (Texas being the exception), our opponent shot a higher percentage from the arc than us. It is hard to score an upset when that happens.

I don't see her shooting 3s. by long jumper I meant inside the arc. but I bet she could become a 3s shooter and may in the WNBA as Gabby did.
