I will doublecheck, but SC just missed a rare situation. There are, I recall, only 11 one-loss seasons in NCAAW. Staley's squad now has 2 losses, so they won't get their 2nd one-loss record, potentially if they won the NC.
Coaches with one-loss seasons:
Leon Barmore/ Sonja Hogg -- LA Tech Muffet McGraw -- Notre Dame Tara VanDerveer -- Stanford Carol Peck -- Purdue Dawn Staley -- SC
Oh, so that means Geno Auriemma has 6 of them, so all the others combined are still not matching his singular achievement.
Plus, you recall there have only been 9 undefeated seasons in NCAAW, and that would be Texas, Baylor, and Tennessee each once, and again UConn with 6 undefeated seasons.

The loss could hav ebeen avoided. Dawn slept through the first period and then wasted her timeouts. The Gamecocks were completely out of contro, forcing bad shots, playing at the wrong tempo and she just sat there and watched

South Carolina also missed eight out of 20 free throws. Including two free throws with I think something less than 20 seconds left. And they used their last time out when they could not get the ball in with I believe 18 seconds left.

Although Charlie Creme and Caroline Peck will strut up and down, along with Staley pitching hard in the press, and claim SC had an off day and should stay $1 in Polls and #1-seed overall in NCAAW, think about their 2 losses.
They lost to Missouri, an 18-12 record but 7-9 Conference record, and Mizz is not only unranked, but not even receiving a single vote. Sort of like barely in the Top 40. Massey has Missouri at #53.
They lost to Kentucky, not far back they were a below .500 team at 9-11, but closed with a surge to 19-11 and 8-8 in SEC, and UK was not only unranked but not receiving a single vote. Again, sort of barely in Top 40. Massey, before the weekend, had them #42. But after beating Tenn, they jumped to #33. After the SC upset, UK likely leaps into the low 20s.
Therefore, SC, a consensus #1 for whole season, had two terrible, ridiculous losses. Apparently SC coaching staff does not relentlessly remind them to not look forward to tougher foes or don't just show up thinking you've won already.
I can't think of a #1 losing to a team that was not at least in the top 30 or so. To do so twice is horrific. The only saving grace as Auriemma would occasionally say about some his teams with no losses cruising through the reg season was they needed to lose to learn multiple lessons that only come with a painful first loss. SC will not sleep on anyone in the NCAAWs.
They should drop in the Polls to #3 and drop to at least second #1-seed in the NCAAW's barring a Stanford loss. They beat NCST in the first game of the season by modest margin. Don't think that carries as much now versus NCST avoiding dreadful losses unlike SC's two dreadful losses. They may not drop much or at all if the apologists get their whining ways.

The reason SC will not win the NC is because UCONN is going to win number 12!!! And watch the BFF, Azzi and Paige emerge just in the nick of time. It's the calm before the storm. Azzi and Paige will peak in the NCAA's just like Stewie did when the titles were on the line, when she was a FR and SO. That's what I see in UCONN's future. And the experience of Dorka, Liv, CW, and E combined with the grit of Ali, Nika, and Caroline will provide the BFF the supporting cast to win number 12.
