Scrappy, small, speedy Japanese guards gave USA problems for a part of the game. They just couldn’t match up with Griner.. Fun game….. Solid core for future international play: Griner, Wilson, Stewie, Gray. Most versatile player on the team is Stewie. Wilson and Gray played well and showed off their elite credentials. Will be interesting to watch how this team evolves over the next few seasons. What guards apart from Gray will step up?

Starters Stewie, Britney, A'ja, Sue and DT set a solid pace. Everyone played well. The only surprise for me was Stewie's 14 rebounds.

It will be intriguing in a shortened between Olympics period of just 3 years, what evolution occurs for USWNT.
Bird has said she's retiring from USWNT, and Taurasi says maybe not 2024 Paris, then wavered. I presume both move on. Chelsea Gray is the replacement for Bird. If Diana leaves, then there is a mad scramble for that SG/ wing slot.
Bear in mind, that EDD and Maya Moore are still unknowns. If they come back, they take two slots. Assume Collier and Diggins might lose slots to the two legends. But that is uncertain.
Next oldest and potential retirements might be Fowles, who will be 37-38 in 2024 and McCoughtry who will be 38. Angel was injured, or she would have been on the team. Even Loyd could lose her slot in 2024 but come back in 2028.
Nneka, if healthy, will only be 33, so she goes on.
Tina Charles will be 35 and perhaps her last Olympics.
Then a batch of newcomers will compete such Ionescu, Dangerfield, maybe a healthy Moriah J., Diggins, McBride, Chiney O., and even Paige or Caitlin.
Here's how it sort of looks if certain things occur:
Griner - center Fowles - center Charles - center Stewart - forward
EDD - forward Nneka - forward Maya - forward McCoughtry - guaed/ wing
Gray - guard Atkins - guard [last one in] Loyd - guard Sims - guard (if healthy)
Because of the physical nature of international play, having bulky and muscular guards like Gray, Sims, and Atkins could prevail over slender guards like Diggins, McBride, or others. It might boost Arike's chances as she is like Sims in that sense and is known for outrageous threes and streaky shooting. Shooting wise also brings in Kelsey Plum as a solid candidate.

Excellent buffet of possibilities. Reminds me of my trip to Japan where I had dinner at a cafeteria that placed desserts first in the selection line. Based on your projections, there's an abundance of desserts in 2024. While I am not projecting it I would not be floored if one college player is chosen. It would reduce the complaints if we could enter three teams as is allowed in individual events.

USA is stuck with an abundance of top notch players. So no matter the 12 there will be some to scream "snub". But that is the way it goes. Be a great or legend commit to the USA teams over the years, and you stick on the roster, perhaps a cycle too long. But who would say Catchings you retired too late. Bird you retired too late. Taurasi you retired too late. Staley you retired too late. Leslie you retired too late.
Fowles has had many injuries but playing very well. She could be in Paris or retire. Maya may already be totally retired. EDD fighting injuries and Lyme Disease forever, she could retire. McCoughtry ha had injuries. So all four could be gone and retired and open a lot of slots, relatively speaking, given the USA doesn't turn over a lot and doesn't need to.
